How to determine the appropriate frequency for your blog

There is no question that blogging can be a fun hobby but it’s also a “job” for many people nowadays and it can bring in a lot of money. If you are reading this, I’m going to assume you are interested in blogging or already doing it. To be successful in the busy world of writing online, it’s important that you do things certain things correctly. How often you blog has a lot to say on how popular you become and therefore, successful. Let’s take a look at some things to keep in mind when you are determining how frequently you should be posting.

Consistency is key

Whatever you are blogging about and however big your audience is, it’s vital to be consistent in terms of your posting pattern. Posting at the same time every few days, every week or every fortnight is going to work in your favor. Come up with a day/time that you blog and stick with it! The most important thing is to be honest with your readers, so that they see you as a reliable blogger. If you KNOW you don’t have the time to blog every day, don’t tell them that you will! They will feel lied to and will likely find another blogger who is more honest. It’s much better to post weekly at the same time and inform your readers this will be your schedule rather than make false promises.

Your subject is a factor

What you are blogging about should also be important when deciding your frequency. If you are a lifestyle blogger who simply posts about your day-to-day life, then readers are going to want to know what you get up to on a daily or almost-daily basis – no matter how mundane it might seem to you! If you are a game reviewer or do clothing hauls, then it goes without saying that you are going to blog less frequently because you are not always going to have interesting material. Don’t post just for the sake of it, focus on writing posts that are genuinely interesting rather than cramming meaningless words on the page.

Try different things

When you are first blogging and you don’t have a set schedule in mind yet, just experiment and see what works. You are not psychic and you will not automatically know what your writers are looking for! Perhaps your readers will want more than what you are putting out there or perhaps they will want less. You will find that when you build a loyal audience, they will be happy with what works for you. Quality really is more important than quantity and they WILL be able to tell if your heart’s not into your writing. So just try different things and see what works for both you and your readers. I recommend starting off posting once a week and then adapting frequency if you need to, based on what feels right for you and feedback from your readers.

Consider how much content you have currently

When somebody stumbles upon a blog they really like, they usually look back on previous blog entries – eager to read all your material. If you already have heaps of content on your page, then you really don’t need to keep writing every single day. You will likely be generating a lot of traffic from posts that you have already written in the past so fresh blog posts are not needed that often. If you have good material and want to write often then that’s great but don’t force yourself to write if you don’t feel like. Be sure to promote when you are going to update your blog on social media and you are sure to draw in the crowd that you are looking for.

Blog at what you’re interested in

There are so many bloggers out there and there has been so many subjects that have been blogged to death, the best approach is to blog something that you really have an interest in. Something that you can put your unique twist on and won’t look like the usual run of the mill content. Of course if you really want to excel in the blog world, video accompanying any blog will make it more interesting and you will have the added benefit of gaining traffic from YouTube if that is also where you host your video files.

Blogging is increasing in popularity online so it’s important that you make yourself stand out. This means writing quality content of course but also being reliable. I hope the mentioned tips have helped you when deciding how frequently you should be putting your voice out there. Whether you are writing daily, weekly, fortnightly or less frequently still, if you have a personality and let it shine through – you are going to find yourself readers that are on the same wavelength as you.
